RCD Espanyol was one of two clubs from Spain that had teams playing during Lennart Johansson Academy Trophy 2017. They participated with one team in Girls 2003.

In addition to RCD Espanyol, 9 other teams from 7 different countries played in Girls 2003. They were divided into 2 different groups, whereof RCD Espanyol could be found in Group B together with B93, Northern Ireland FA, Stabæk Fotball and HJK Helsinki.

RCD Espanyol made it to Play-off after reaching 1:st place in Group B. Once in the playoff they won every match inluding the Final against Paris Saint-Germain, which they won with 2-1. Thereby RCD Espanyol won the entire Play-off in Girls 2003 during Lennart Johansson Academy Trophy 2017.

RCD Espanyol also participated in Girls 2002 during Lennart Johansson Academy Trophy 2016. They reached the final in Play-off, but lost it against Paris Saint-Germain with 1-3 and ended up in second place.

RCD Espanyol comes from Barcelona which lies approximately 2300 km from Solna, where Lennart Johansson Academy Trophy takes place. Other than RCD Espanyol, the club FC Barcelona does also originate from the area around Barcelona.
